Purgatory Park
The city’s largest community park, 155 acres along Purgatory Creek. The 1.2-mile Inner Loop crosses the creek twice, through wetlands, prairie and woods.
Summer Fest
A free evening at Minnetonka Civic Center Park every June, with a kids’ Tot Trot, a fire department open house, live music and fireworks at 10 p.m.
Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail
A 15.8-mile Three Rivers trail from Hopkins through Minnetonka to Excelsior and Carver Park Reserve. It’s plowed in Minnetonka in winter.

Getting around
I-494, I-394, Highway 7 and Highway 169 all pass through Minnetonka, about eight miles west of Minneapolis. Metro Transit runs local and express buses, with free park-and-rides at I-394 and Hopkins Crossroad and at I-394 and Plymouth Road. The METRO Green Line Extension opens June 12, 2027, with Opus Station near Bren Road.
Parks and trails
Five community parks, 44 neighborhood parks and 1,000 acres of natural open space. More than 20 percent of the city is wetlands and lakes, and Minnehaha Creek starts here. Lone Lake Park has a fishing dock and a 5-mile mountain bike trail, and Big Willow Park follows Minnehaha Creek. City trails connect to the Lake Minnetonka and Minnesota River Bluffs regional trails.
Through the year
Summer Fest every June at Minnetonka Civic Center Park (14600 Minnetonka Boulevard). A farmers market on Tuesday afternoons, June to September, at The Marsh (15000 Minnetonka Boulevard), plus a winter market in December. Two Hennepin County libraries are in the city: Minnetonka Library (17524 Excelsior Boulevard) and Ridgedale Library (12601 Ridgedale Drive).
School districts
Three districts serve Minnetonka: Hopkins Public Schools, Minnetonka Public Schools and Wayzata Public Schools. Boundaries go by address, so check any home with the district before you write an offer. We’ll do it with you.

Water and sewer
The city bills water, sewer, stormwater and recycling every three months, always in the owner’s name. Start service with the city’s online form or call Utility Billing at 952-939-8255. When you sell, use the city’s stop-service form so the final bill goes to the right address.
Trash and recycling
You pick your own garbage hauler from the city’s four licensed companies; not every hauler serves every street. Republic Services picks up recycling every other week (Mondays west of I-494, Tuesdays east) and weekly organics by sign-up, both on the city utility bill. Haulers must offer curbside yard waste, sometimes for an extra fee.
Electric, gas and internet
Electric is Xcel Energy and gas is CenterPoint Energy. Xfinity and CenturyLink serve the city, and other companies may too. Check availability for the specific home.
Winter parking
Citywide plowing starts after 2 inches or more of snow, usually between 2 and 4 a.m. There’s no parking on city streets from 2 to 6 a.m. all year, or for more than six hours at a time. Don’t push snow into or across the street.
Pets
Minnetonka doesn’t license dogs, but every dog must wear an ID tag, and dogs and cats over six months need current rabies shots. More than two dogs, five cats or five dogs and cats combined needs a $35 yearly permit.
New to Minnesota
You have 60 days after becoming a resident to get a Minnesota driver’s license and register your vehicles. Hennepin County’s Ridgedale Service Center (12601 Ridgedale Drive) handles driver’s licenses and vehicle registration.

City water
City code says a home that isn’t connected to city water must be connected before it’s sold, or the buyer must connect it right after. If the home is on a private well, ask the city early.
Sump pumps
City code bans draining sump pumps and other clear water into the sanitary sewer. It isn’t a sale inspection, but it’s worth checking before you list.
Rental homes
Rental homes must be registered with the city every year, and registration doesn’t transfer. A buyer who rents the home out registers within 30 days of buying.
Check early
Open permits, unpermitted work, HOA rules and special assessments are easier to sort out before you list than in the middle of a sale.
